Black Friday in Downtown Salt Lake City

Black Friday was really great this year.  We booked hotel rooms downtown and walked across the block to see the Christmas lights at Temple Square.  The Downtown Marriott hotel was perfect.  It was close to all of the action so we could walk to everything.  Traveling all year gave me enough Marriott points to take the family out for the night.  It snowed quite a bit that day and it was pretty dangerous just trying to get downtown.  After the crazy drive, we found that downtown was almost a ghost town! Most people must have decided to stay home and out of the storm.  We had never seen that few people at Temple Square on the night the lights were lit.

There was a long wait to get into Cheesecake Factory, so the boys played games at the Microsoft store.

They got to demo virtual reality glasses.  Jill and I didn't try, but the children said it was pretty cool.

My only picture at the Cheesecake Factory.  We love the food there and had a nice time.

The lights were beautiful because of the fresh snow and without anyone there, it was perfect!

Later we were able to swim in the nice pool.

In the morning we exercised and relaxed a bit.  We ate breakfast at Kneaders and walked around City Creek one more time.  Alyssa wanted to see Santa so we waited in the short line.  This Santa was one of the best of Santa's helpers we've ever seen.  He was so genuine and great.  He was so kind to her, telling her that she was beautiful and that her freckles were angel kisses.  He also told her that he'd be watching to see if her parents were happy, because that's how he'd decide if she'd been naughty or nice.  Of course, the boys preferred to skip the line and go back to the Microsoft Store to play games.

Before we checked out of the hotel, we got to play some foosball and had a lot of fun.  We should really get a table!  We would have liked to stay a bit longer, but Jill had to get back home to attend a bridal shower.

We had a really great time together, made all the better by getting two rooms.  Jill and I had a connecting room to the children who had their own room. It's always nice to have a bit more space.  We are going to try and stay downtown again next year.  The entire hotel was full of locals who were all using their Marriott points, too. We definitely need to do this again next year.  It was a great way to kick-off the Christmas season.
